EVs have a different lifespan than conventional cars
Like petrol and diesel cars, electric vehicles do not last forever. However, the factors that determine their lifespan are quite different.
Instead of relying on an internal combustion engine (ICE), EVs are powered by an electric motor and a high-voltage battery pack, making battery health the single most important factor in determining how long the vehicle remains efficient.
Unlike traditional engines that experience wear from hundreds of moving parts, electric motors are mechanically simpler and generally require less maintenance.
As a result, many EVs can remain on the road for years with fewer servicing requirements.
How long does EV battery last?
The battery is the heart of every electric vehicle. Over time, all lithium-ion batteries gradually lose their ability to hold a full charge because of natural chemical ageing and repeated charging cycles.
However, this degradation happens slowly rather than suddenly.
Most modern EV batteries are designed to last 15 to 20 years under normal driving conditions.
Manufacturers generally consider a battery to have reached the end of its useful automotive life when its capacity drops to around 70-80 per cent of its original level.
Even then, the battery continues to function and the vehicle remains usable, although driving range may be reduced.
Battery quality makes a big difference
Not all EV batteries are built the same. The quality of battery cells, cooling systems and overall engineering significantly influence how long a battery lasts.
Premium battery technology typically offers better durability and slower degradation over time.
Battery replacement is also becoming more practical as technology advances and production costs decline.
In addition, older batteries can often be repurposed for stationary energy storage instead of being discarded.
Modern EVs are built to last longer
Battery technology has improved dramatically over the past decade.
Research suggests that many modern EV batteries lose less than 2 per cent of their capacity each year, meaning drivers can expect reliable performance for well over a decade.
To provide additional peace of mind, most automakers offer battery warranties of around eight years or 160,000 km, whichever comes earlier.
In many cases, real-world battery performance exceeds these warranty periods, allowing owners to enjoy their EVs for many more years.
EVs have lower maintenance cost
For most buyers, battery longevity should not be a major concern.
Thanks to continuous improvements in battery chemistry, thermal management and charging technology, today’s electric vehicles are more durable than ever.
Compared with conventional petrol or diesel cars, EVs generally require less maintenance because they have fewer moving parts and no engine oil, spark plugs or exhaust systems.
Lower maintenance requirements combined with long-lasting batteries make electric vehicles an attractive long-term investment.
