Hyundai plans affordable made-in-India EV to drive mass adoption by 2027

Hyundai Motor is gearing up for its biggest push yet in India’s electric vehicle (EV) space, with plans to launch a high-volume, aggressively-priced electric car aimed at the mass market.

Expected to debut in late 2026 or early 2027, this new model will mark Hyundai’s entry into affordable EVs and play a key role in its global electrification strategy.

Hyundai’s 2030 global vision: 5.55 million sales target

The South Korean automaker has outlined an ambitious goal of achieving 5.55 million global vehicle sales by 2030, with nearly 60 per cent of total volumes coming from EVs and hybrids.

Hyundai’s roadmap focuses on expanding its electric portfolio, introducing new body formats, and advancing software-driven vehicle platforms.

To meet these targets, the company plans to sell 3.3 million electrified vehicles per year, including models from its luxury arm, Genesis.

It will gradually shift towards hybrid and electric powertrains, starting 2026.

Affordable EV for India: Designed for local needs

Hyundai’s upcoming India-focused EV will be developed and manufactured domestically, allowing the brand to offer competitive pricing in a cost-sensitive market.

The car will likely be positioned below the Creta Electric, targeting first-time EV buyers and urban commuters.

While official details are still under wraps, early reports suggest that the model could be available with two battery options, offering a range of over 450 km per charge.

Design-wise, the EV will reportedly blend styling cues from popular compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Venue and Exter, while also drawing inspiration from the global Ioniq and Inster electric models.

Genesis brand under consideration for India

In addition to its mainstream EV plans, Hyundai is also exploring the possibility of introducing its premium Genesis lineup in India.

The company is currently assessing market demand for luxury electric and hybrid vehicles, which could help strengthen its presence in the upper end of the Indian market.

The Genesis brand, already popular in the US and South Korea, is expected to transition to hybrid and electric powertrains by 2026.

Future-ready technologies and extended range EVs

Hyundai is investing heavily in battery and powertrain integration to deliver better efficiency and longer driving ranges.

The company has confirmed that its first extended range EVs, capable of delivering up to 965 km on a single charge, will arrive by 2027.

These next generation vehicles will feature advanced in-house software and connected technologies, enhancing both performance and user experience.

Hyundai’s focus on “smart mobility” will also extend to commercial vehicles, including electric vans and hydrogen fuel cell trucks for global markets like the US.

E-Vroooom’s views

Hyundai’s upcoming affordable EV represents a major milestone in India’s transition to clean mobility.

With growing government support, expanding charging infrastructure, and improving consumer confidence, the timing couldn’t be better for Hyundai to tap into the country’s evolving EV ecosystem.

If priced right, the made-in-India Hyundai EV could become a game-changer for mass electric mobility, driving adoption among everyday buyers and setting new benchmarks in range, quality, and reliability.
