Unlike the earlier i3 hatchback (sold between 2013 and 2022), this version is a completely new, premium electric sedan focused on range, performance, and cutting-edge technology.
Bold Neue Klasse design with classic BMW roots
The 2026 BMW i3 introduces a fresh design language that blends modern EV styling with classic BMW proportions.
At the front, the car features:
Slim headlights integrated with signature LED accents
A unique hexagonal lower grille design
Sporty air intakes with gloss-black detailing
From the side, the i3 sticks to a more traditional “2.5-box” sedan shape, rather than the overly curved designs seen in many EVs.
Flush door handles and clean body panels improve aerodynamics while maintaining a premium look.
At the rear, there are:
Sleek, separate LED tail-lamps
A bold, sculpted bumper
Minimalist black accents
Dimensions are:
Length: 4,760 mm
Width: 1,865 mm
Height: 1,480 mm
Wheelbase: 2,897 mm
BMW has also hinted at a Touring (estate) version, expected to debut later.
Futuristic interior with massive displays
Step inside, and the i3 feels like a concept car brought to life.
The cabin is dominated by:
A 17.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system
A full-width Panoramic Vision display acting as the driver’s display
A unique two-spoke steering wheel
Physical buttons are minimal, giving the interior a clean, digital-first feel
However, essential controls like hazard lights and drive selector are still easily accessible.
Key features include:
Powered front seats
Ambient lighting
Wireless charging pad
Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) assistant
Optional 3D head-up display
Level 2 ADAS safety tech
The result is a cabin that feels both luxurious and highly futuristic.
Powerful performance and impressive 900 km range
The new BMW i3 is built on an 800V electrical architecture, enabling faster charging and better efficiency.
Powertrain details:
Dual-motor “50 xDrive” setup
469 hp and 645 Nm torque
Likely 108.7 kWh battery pack
The standout highlight is its 900 km WLTP range, making it one of the longest-range electric sedans in its class.
Ultra-fast charging and new tech
Charging is another area where the i3 shines:
Supports 400 kW DC fast charging
Adds up to 400 km range in just 10 minutes
AC charging up to 22 kW
BMW has also introduced a new central control system called the “Heart of Joy” ECU, which manages:
Drivetrain
Braking
Regeneration
Steering
Charging systems
This system is said to be 10 times faster than previous BMW electronics, improving responsiveness and efficiency.
Launch timeline and what to expect
Production of the BMW i3 will begin in August 2026 at BMW’s Munich plant, with global deliveries starting in autumn 2026.
While BMW plans to launch the iX3 in India by early 2027, the arrival of the i3 in the Indian market is still uncertain.
E-Vroooom’s views
With class-leading range, futuristic tech, and bold design, it sets a strong benchmark for upcoming EV sedans.
The 2026 BMW i3 is more than just a new electric car — it’s a glimpse into BMW’s future and if this is the direction BMW is heading, the future of electric driving looks seriously exciting.
