Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) maker VinFast is preparing to expand aggressively in India where it may enter the budget electric segment.
After announcing plans for the VinFast Limo Green, the brand is also evaluating the compact electric hatchback VF5 for the Indian market.

| VinFast should try to price the VF5 around Rs 10 lakh. |
If launched, the VF5 could compete with popular budget EVs such as the Tata Tiago EV and Tata Punch EV.
Already on sale in several international markets, the VF5 combines compact dimensions, modern features, and practical electric performance.
Here’s a simple look at what this affordable EV could offer Indian buyers.
Compact size with practical space
The VinFast VF5 is designed as a compact urban hatchback with a hint of SUV styling.
Its global-spec dimensions are:
Length: 3,967 mm
Width: 1,723 mm
Height: 1,579 mm
Wheelbase: 2,514 mm
These numbers make the VF5 slightly longer than the Tata Punch EV, while its width and height are marginally lower.
The longer wheelbase should help improve interior legroom.
Ground clearance in international markets stands at 169 mm, though the India-spec version could see a slight rise to handle local road conditions.
The VF5 also offers decent practicality:
Boot capacity: 260 litres
Expandable capacity: Up to 900 litres
Rear seats: 60:40 split-folding
VinFast appears to have prioritised rear passenger comfort over maximum boot space, which should make the car more practical for daily family use.
Modern design with SUV-like elements
The VF5 follows VinFast’s signature design language. The front features the brand’s distinctive styling, while the body includes flared wheel arches and black cladding that give it a mild SUV-like character.
Key design highlights include:
LED lighting
Stylish body cladding
17-inch alloy wheels (Vietnam-spec)
Bold front fascia
Overall, the VF5 blends hatchback practicality with a rugged crossover look, which is a popular trend among modern compact EVs.
Interior and features
Inside, the VF5 has a minimalist yet modern cabin layout. The global model features an all-black interior with silver accents, giving it a clean and premium feel.
Key features include:
7-inch digital driver display
8-inch infotainment system
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Voice command support
Leatherette seats
Keyless entry and start
Auto headlights
PM2.5 air filter
4-speaker audio system
The VF5 is strictly a five-seater, but realistically the rear seat will be most comfortable for two adults and a child, especially on longer journeys.
Safety features
Safety equipment on the international model includes:
4 to 6 airbags (depending on the market)
Rear parking assist
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
However, the exact safety features for the India-spec VF5 are yet to be confirmed.
Battery options and driving range
The VinFast VF5 is offered globally with two battery options, which gives buyers flexibility depending on their range needs.
Battery types:
29.6 kWh battery – Up to 268 km range (NEDC)
37.23 kWh battery – Up to 326 km range (NEDC)
The smaller battery can charge from 10 per cent to 70 per cent in under 33 minutes, making it suitable for quick top-ups.
If both the battery packs are offered in India, the VF5 could cover a wide range of urban and short highway driving needs.
Expected price in India
Pricing will play a key role in the VF5’s success. The updated Tata Punch EV currently starts at around Rs 9.69 lakh (ex-showroom) or Rs 1 million.
Given its slightly larger size and additional features, the VinFast VF5 is expected to be priced around Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom) or Rs 1.2 million.
Local manufacturing at VinFast’s upcoming Tamil Nadu plant and high localisation levels could help the company keep prices competitive.
VF5 to power VinFast’s ride-hailing plans
VinFast is also planning to introduce its Green and Smart Mobility (GSM) ride-hailing service in India.
According to the company, the VF5 will form the majority of the GSM fleet, alongside the VinFast Limo Green electric MPV.
The fleet version of the VF5 will likely differ from the retail model, focusing more on durability and operational efficiency.
E-Vroooom’s views
VinFast may be preparing to expand aggressively in India where it may enter the budget segment, but if the pricing is Rs 12 lakh or above, it could find it difficult to keep up its numbers in tandem with Tata Punch in the affordable EV category.
