Tata Sierra EV vs New Sierra ICE: 7 big differences that make Tata’s electric SUV more exciting

The iconic Sierra badge is back, but Tata Motors is not stopping with the petrol and diesel-powered Sierra but also introducing its electric vehicle (EV) version.

The highly anticipated Tata Sierra EV is now gearing up for launch and promises to be much more than just an electric version of the new Sierra.

Tata Sierra EV vs New Sierra ICE
Tata Sierra EV could be priced around Rs 20 lakh.

With futuristic technology, longer driving range, advanced features and a distinct driving experience, the Sierra EV could become one of the most sought after electric SUVs in India.

Same iconic design, different personality

At first glance, both SUVs look nearly identical. The Sierra EV retains the boxy silhouette, connected LED lighting, signature wraparound rear glass area and the nostalgic design elements inspired by the original Sierra.

However, the EV version gets a cleaner front fascia, EV-specific styling details and aerodynamic enhancements to improve efficiency.

Expect unique alloy wheel designs and exclusive colour options to further distinguish it from the petrol and diesel models.

The biggest difference: Electric power vs combustion engines

The Sierra internal combustion engine (ICE) is offered with Tata’s new turbo-petrol and diesel engine options, targeting buyers who prefer conventional fuel-powered SUVs.

The Sierra EV, meanwhile, will rely entirely on battery power. Reports suggest it could be offered with multiple battery pack options and may even get dual-motor all-wheel-drive variants in higher trims.

For buyers looking for instant acceleration, silent operation and lower running costs, the EV clearly has the advantage.

Range could be a major highlight

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the Sierra EV is its expected driving range.

Industry estimates indicate that Tata could offer a claimed range of up to 500 km on a single charge, putting it among the strongest contenders in the midsize electric SUV segment.

That makes it a practical option not just for city driving but also for long-distance highway journeys.

More technology inside the cabin

The new Sierra already comes loaded with premium features, including a modern digital cockpit, panoramic displays, ventilated seats, wireless charging and connected car technology.

The Sierra EV is expected to take things further with EV-specific software, advanced energy management systems, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality and a more futuristic user interface.

This could make the EV feel noticeably more high-tech than its ICE sibling.

Advanced safety features

Safety is expected to be a strong point for both the models. The Sierra EV is likely to feature Level 2 ADAS, multiple airbags, electronic stability control, 360-degree camera and other advanced driver assistance technologies, like the ICE version.

While many features are available on the ICE version too, Tata is expected to position the EV as the more premium and technologically advanced offering.

Expected price difference

Pricing will play a crucial role in the Sierra EV's success.

The Sierra ICE currently starts from around Rs 11.49 lakh or Rs 1.15 million (ex-showroom) and goes significantly higher depending on the variant.

The Sierra EV is expected to command a premium, with estimates suggesting a price range of around Rs 20 lakh (Rs 2 million) to Rs 25 lakh (Rs 2.5 million) (ex-showroom).

While that is a substantial jump, buyers will be paying for a larger battery, electric drivetrain and a more sophisticated technology package.

Rivals and market positioning

Unlike the ICE Sierra, which competes with mainstream midsize SUVs, the Sierra EV will enter a fast-growing electric SUV segment.

It is expected to challenge models such as the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti Suzuki e Vitara.

E-Vroooom’s views

The new Sierra ICE is designed for traditional SUV buyers, but the Sierra EV aims to showcase Tata’s vision for the future.

With an expected 500 km range, cutting-edge technology, premium features and potentially all-wheel-drive capability, the Tata Sierra EV could become the more desirable version of the iconic SUV.

For buyers willing to embrace electric mobility, the Tata Sierra EV may not just be an alternative to the ICE model — but could be the Sierra that truly defines the next generation of Indian SUVs.
