Maruti WagonR Flex Fuel vs regular WagonR petrol: What makes India’s first E100-compatible hatchback so special?

Maruti’s popular hatchback gets a green makeover

Maruti Suzuki has taken a major step towards alternative-fuel mobility by introducing the WagonR Flex Fuel, making it India’s first passenger car capable of running on high ethanol blends, including E100 (100 per cent ethanol).

While the regular WagonR has long been one of India’s best-selling hatchbacks, the new Flex Fuel version aims to offer a cleaner and more sustainable driving experience without changing the car’s familiar practicality.

Maruti WagonR Flex Fuel vs regular WagonR petrol

At first glance, both versions may look nearly identical.

However, beneath the skin, the Flex Fuel model features several important upgrades that set it apart from the standard petrol-powered WagonR.

WagonR Flex Fuel vs petrol WagonR: The biggest difference

The standard WagonR runs on petrol and is compatible with the current E20 fuel available across India.

The new Flex Fuel version, however, can operate on a much wider range of fuel blends, from E20 all the way up to E85 and even E100 in compatible conditions.

This means drivers can use higher ethanol blends without worrying about engine compatibility.

The vehicle automatically adapts to the fuel mixture being used, making it significantly more versatile than the regular petrol model.

What has changed under the hood?

Unlike the standard WagonR, which uses Maruti Suzuki’s familiar petrol powertrain, the Flex Fuel version receives a modified 1.2-litre K12N engine specially engineered to handle ethanol-rich fuels.

Key upgrades include:

Ethanol-resistant fuel lines

Revised fuel injectors

Upgraded fuel pump

Recalibrated engine control unit (ECU)

Dedicated ethanol sensor to detect fuel composition automatically

These changes ensure smooth performance regardless of the ethanol percentage in the fuel tank.

The regular WagonR does not require such hardware because it is designed primarily for petrol and lower ethanol blends.

Design and features: Almost identical

Visually, the Flex Fuel WagonR remains very close to the standard model. Apart from special Flex Fuel graphics and badging, there are few noticeable exterior differences.

Inside, the hatchback retains the familiar WagonR layout.

Features include:

7-inch touchscreen infotainment system

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support

Steering-mounted controls

Manual air conditioning

Power-adjustable ORVMs

Four-speaker audio system

Safety equipment includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Assist and rear parking sensors.

Why Flex Fuel version matters

The biggest advantage of the Flex Fuel WagonR is its potential environmental benefit.

Ethanol is a renewable fuel derived largely from agricultural sources such as sugarcane.

Higher ethanol usage can help reduce dependence on imported crude oil and lower overall carbon emissions.

The government is also expanding ethanol infrastructure, with plans for hundreds of ethanol dispensing stations by the end of 2026 and thousands more by 2027.

This could make flex-fuel vehicles increasingly practical over the next few years.

Expected price difference

Maruti Suzuki has not officially announced the price of the WagonR Flex Fuel.

However, industry estimates suggest it could cost around Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) more than equivalent petrol variants because of the additional fuel-system and engine modifications.

Some reports indicate an expected price in the region of Rs 8.5 lakh (Rs 850,000), although official pricing is still awaited.

Should buyers be excited?

The regular WagonR remains one of the most practical and affordable hatchbacks in India.

However, the new Flex Fuel version represents a glimpse into the future of cleaner mobility.

It delivers the same tall-boy practicality, spacious cabin and trusted WagonR formula while adding the flexibility to run on ethanol-rich fuels.

For buyers looking beyond conventional petrol technology, the WagonR Flex Fuel could become one of the most important hatchback launches in India’s evolving automotive landscape versus the petrol version as there are plans to grow the ethanol infrastructure manifold.
