Tata expands Battery-as-a-Service to entire EV portfolio: Prices, benefits and what it means for buyers

Tata.ev has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) offering across its entire electric vehicle (EV) portfolio in India.

The programme, which was introduced with the Tiago EV and Punch EV, is now available with the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV as well.

Tata expands Battery-as-a-Service to entire EV portfolio
With BaaS, Tata.ev prices start at Rs 4.69 lakh.

The move gives customers an alternative way to purchase a Tata electric car by separating the cost of the vehicle from the battery.

What is Tata EV Battery-as-a-Service?

Under the Tata EV BaaS programme, customers do not have to pay the entire cost of the battery upfront as part of the vehicle purchase.

Instead, the battery cost is financed separately through a loan agreement.

This structure can reduce the initial ex-showroom price of the electric vehicle, potentially making Tata EVs more accessible to buyers who want to lower their upfront expenditure.

The battery financing comes with flexible tenure options, while the monthly battery EMI depends on factors such as the battery capacity, initial down payment and selected loan tenure.

Tata EV BaaS prices start at Rs 4.69 lakh

With the expanded programme, Tata.ev’s BaaS pricing starts at Rs 4.69 lakh (ex-showroom) or Rs 469,000 for the entry-level Tiago EV.

The battery usage cost for the model is indicated at Rs 2.6 per km.

At the other end of the range is the Harrier EV, which is available under the BaaS structure at an indicated price of Rs 14.49 lakh (ex-showroom), with a battery usage cost of Rs 5.9 per km.

The indicated prices apply to the entry-level variants of the respective models and are based on a stated usage assumption of 60 km per day.

BaaS now covers Tata's Full EV line-up

The expansion means buyers can opt for the BaaS model across Tata’s broader electric vehicle range.

The portfolio covered under the programme includes:

-- Tata Tiago EV

-- Tata Punch EV

-- Tata Nexon EV

-- Tata Curvv EV

-- Tata Sierra EV

-- Tata Harrier EV

This gives customers the option to compare the conventional upfront purchase structure with a model where the battery cost is financed separately.

What does BaaS mean for EV buyers?

The biggest difference is the way the electric car's purchase cost is structured. Instead of paying for the vehicle and battery together, buyers can separate the two components.

For customers focused on reducing the initial purchase price, this could make an EV easier to consider within a particular budget.

However, the overall cost of ownership will depend on the battery financing terms, down payment, tenure and usage.

The per-kilometre battery usage charge is another important component for buyers to consider when calculating their regular running expenses.

BaaS available for personal use only

Tata.ev has specified that the Battery-as-a-Service programme is available only for personal use. Commercial usage is excluded from the offering.

PLEASE NOTE: In a Battery-as-a-Service programme, the service provider or financier usually manages battery replacement and degradation.

E-Vroooom’s views

With BaaS now extended across the portfolio, Tata is offering buyers greater flexibility in how they finance an electric vehicle.

The programme essentially provides an alternative ownership and payment structure, allowing customers to choose between paying the battery cost upfront or financing it separately.

For prospective Tata EV buyers, the key factors to compare will, therefore, be the upfront price, battery EMI, per-kilometre usage cost, loan tenure and total ownership cost before choosing the BaaS route.
